No Flour No Sugar Diet Author Takes Shots at Low-Carb diets

The diet sounds simple enough, avoid all forms of refined flour and refined sugar and you will lose weight and keep it off. Believe it or not, such a diet, created by Dr. Peter H Gott, has developed a loyal following of millions worldwide. What more could you want? Everything else is fair game except for that Hersey's chocolate bar and that Wonder Bread.

It was interesting to see Dr. Gott talk about the risks of low-carb diets in his "Ask Dr. Gott" syndicated column. Basically Dr. Gott has been echoing what many in the health field have been saying for years about low-carb diets. While they can help shed those pounds extremely fast (15 pounds in 14 days), they can lead to mega problems down the road.

Take for instance the high protein and fat consumption that most low card dieters consume because of the lack of carbohydrates. The uric acid in the meat leaks out synovial fluid out of the bones thus causing arthritis down the road. The cholesterol in the meat can lead to high blood pressure, hypoglycemia and diabetes. The thousands of cancer cells in the meat can lead to cancer and not to mention the possibility of BIV and other highly contagious strains of viruses found in livestock.

However, Dr. Gott is missing one main point. Removing all flour and sugar from the diet is like a blind man driving a bulldozer. It's not the sugar or flour that is the problem, but rather the type. So Dr. Gott is onto something but he is missing one main point, refined is the key to why most people gain weight on high carbohydrate diets. Eliminate the junk carbs such as refined sugar and refined flours and rice and you're on the right track.

  1. Even whole wheat flour converts in to sugar which converts in to insulin causing a high which is followed by a low, tiredness and hunger. Spelt bread is ok and so is rice as these do not have such harsh effects. You should be eating vegtables to get carbs such as beans, chick peas ect... they keep you full for longer.
Processed foods are all bad. Processed meat, Vegtable oil (often made from palm oil which is also very bad for the environment) , "low fat marge" ... and even things that are supposed to be good for you such as soya milk and cereal bars. These fats are hard to break down and your body stores them. Your body needs fats to break fats down. Olive oil, real butter, flack seed oil and nuts and avocado are all great examples of fats to include in your diet.

  2. I disagree with you. If I have any sweetener: maple syrup, honey, etc, I want to binge. It is healthier to avoid all sweeteners. Fruit is the only sweet thing we should eat. As for flour, many of us are finding that we are sensitive to gluten and must use alternative flours.

  3. It is healthier to avoid all starch. Starch/sugar gets broken down into sugar in the body and causes cravings for more sugar. It's like the potato chip ad "You can't eat just one."

If one is serious about their health, they will avoid ALL starch. Dairy needs to go, too.

Fruit is all you need for sugar. Just remember to eat fruit as a separate meal.
