How Sugar Harms

How sugar harms

It may be one of the most used products in foods today, but that does not mean that it is safe for consumption. Although there are many other factors involved in the current health problems facing mankind, it's safe to say that refined sugar (table sugar or sucrose) is one of the major factors.

According to research, sugar (sucrose) is actually a drug since it contains no nutritional value (unless added otherwise), because of this, it has many disadvantages as well as a few advantages. For one it can enter the blood stream quickly and provide a boost of energy when needed. However this, if done on a regular basis, can be detrimental as it can cause the pancreas to be overworked and thus diabetes can set in.

Another problem is that it breaks down the immune system to the point where it is unable to defend the body from invading forces. An average white blood cell can destroy up to 18 different bacteria before it is killed. However, by the time there are 24 teaspoons of sugar in the bloodstream, that number drops down to one. The average soda pop contains 10 to 12 teaspoons and a slice of chocolate cake contains 4 or more teaspoons. Thus it's pretty evident why we get colds so easily; our immune systems are not up to par and cannot defend the body when the need arises.

Sugar is also a major cause of cancer. Believe it or not, a person who is vegetarian or vegan, but consumes large amounts of sugar on a regular basis is just as bad if not worse than a person who was eating regular meat. Again this goes back to the fact that sugar destroys the immune system and makes it unable to fight off invading bacteria.

Weight loss is almost impossible to maintain if large amounts of sugar are in the body. The sugar blocks the cells fat receptors thus render them useless. More importantly they cause the red blood cells to become sticky and when this happens, sufficient oxygen is not able to be delivered to the brain.

Sugar also stunts the learning ability of school age children. There is nothing more detrimental to a preschool, kindergarten, elementary or high school student than a high sugary diet. Not only does the refined sugar cause behavioral problems, but it stunts comprehension skills and thus dwarfs the child or teens ability to learn.

The best way to fight sugar is to substitute it for other things (in moderation). Any type of sweetener in excess will produce the same effects, but if it is used in moderation, sweeteners like maple syrup, molasses, honey and sugar in the raw as well as Florida Crystal are much better alternatives.

  2. Sugar can definitely cause different health problems. You have to limit your intake of sugar so you can avoid these problems.

  3. Who wrote this article? Do you ever proof read your work? I can point out so many grammatical errors it's ridiculous. You should find a new line of work. I was taught proof reading back in elementary school. It drives me crazy when someone publishes an article like this and never even botheres to take the time to proof read their work. It shows how little they care about the subject matter they are writing about!
